I was in Millbrook today to get a cup of coffee. If you recall a while ago I had a post about the sad state of Millbrook and how it seemed to lack life and vigor, another small town which hadn’t kept up with its neighbors, Rhinebeck and Millerton.
Well I was pleasantly surprised. there are a few new stores, one being Punch which replaced a failed art gallery and a great little coffee shop called Babbett’s. Of course it was early Spring and things looked good generally but I felt that maybe Millbrook was on the right track.
there are two stores still for rent and I tried to think what would be a good use but couldn’t come up with any ideas. The most important corner is still vacant. It used to be very popular, Kading’s Corner Store but has gone through a couple of failures and has been empty for a while.
What we need is a small movie theater, nothing big and extravagant. There used to be one in the Miller’s Agway but that was closed when I was a kid. It had wooden chairs but played pretty good movies, at 25 cents a ticket. Between reels everyone would shout to the projectionist who often fell asleep or snuck out for a smoke.
I think I am starting to sound like the Music Man, “What we need is a marching band!”- a description of the movie is- “A con man comes to a Midwestern town with a scam using a boy’s marching band program, but things don’t go according to plan.” I’m sure some of you remember that movie.
Last but not least, there was a small group of yes, older people, with an Occupy Wall Street sign, sitting on a park bench. Right On Baby!!
